How to improve YouTube audio without downloading the video

Poor audio is not a single problem. Background noise, hum and sudden changes in volume need different kinds of processing.

Identify the problem first

Poor audio can mean several different things. Steady hiss calls for noise reduction, a persistent low buzz may need hum filtering, and abrupt changes in voice volume call for speech leveling. If words are already distorted in the recording, stronger processing may not make them clearer.

Adjust the audio while watching

  1. Open the video in Chrome. Choose a passage with normal speech, a quiet phrase and a pause.
  2. Enable cleaning in the installed noise extension. Start with noise reduction and speech leveling at zero, hum filtering disabled and the equalizer neutral.
  3. Add only the processing that addresses the most distracting issue. Change one control at a time.
  4. Compare Original and Processed on the same passage before adding another tool.
  5. Check another part of the video: noise and volume can change after an edit or a change of speaker.

What the equalizer does

noise provides Low, Mid and Clarity controls. An equalizer changes the frequency balance; it does not separate speech from noise. Increasing Clarity may make consonants easier to hear while also increasing hiss. If the voice becomes harsh or thin, use Reset to return the bands to zero.

Check whether listening is easier

Judge more than loudness. A useful result makes words easier to follow and reduces the need to adjust device volume. A louder or brighter version can sound better at first but become tiring over a long video.

Limits of playback processing

noise processes audio locally without changing the source video. It does not promise to recover missing frequencies, remove every kind of reverberation or repair severe clipping. Subtitles or another recording may help more with those problems.

For persistent hiss, use the noise reduction guide. For difficult speech, see how to improve intelligibility.

Hear the words, not the noise

noise processes audio while you watch. Add the extension and adjust the cleaning to suit your recording.
