How to make speech in a video easier to understand

Overall volume is not always the issue. Words can drop out, noise can mask consonants, and a speaker may keep moving closer to or further from the microphone.

Why volume is not enough

A voice can be loud enough yet hard to understand. Background noise masks detail, quiet word endings disappear, and loud phrases make you lower the volume. A simple volume increase raises the noise along with speech.

Identify your main difficulty first. If background sound masks words, try noise reduction. If different phrases require different listening volumes, start with speech leveling.

Set up clearer speech

  1. Choose a passage containing quiet speech, normal speech and a louder moment.
  2. Enable cleaning in noise. Add gentle noise reduction if there is a distracting background; otherwise leave it at zero.
  3. Gradually increase “Even out speech”. Check whether quiet and loud phrases are more comfortable at one device volume.
  4. If the background becomes more noticeable or speech sounds too flat, reduce leveling.
  5. Compare Original and Processed, then check another passage with a different speaker.

What speech leveling means

The control uses dynamic compression to restrain louder passages and adds gain. It can reduce volume differences, but does not identify each speaker separately or reconstruct inaudible words. Remaining background noise may become more noticeable along with quiet speech.

When to try Clarity

The equalizer includes a Clarity band. Try a small increase if the voice sounds muffled. Reduce it if hiss, sibilance or harshness increases. Avoid raising every band at once: it makes identifying the helpful adjustment harder.

When subtitles may help more

Severe clipping, overlapping speakers or strong echo can limit the benefit of filtering. Try subtitles or another recording. Pushing processing further may remove additional speech details.

Hear the words, not the noise

noise processes audio while you watch. Add the extension and adjust the cleaning to suit your recording.
