RNNoise vs GTCRN: which noise reduction engine should you choose?

There is no universal winner. The result depends on the noise, the voice and the quality of the original recording.

What RNNoise and GTCRN are

Both engines address noise in speech. RNNoise is a noise suppression library based on a recurrent neural network. GTCRN is a speech enhancement model designed around low computational requirements. These project descriptions do not establish which engine works better in noise.

The extension offers them as two processing options. The result depends on the background, voice, source quality and strength. A model name alone cannot reliably identify the best choice for a particular lecture or interview.

Compare engines on your own video

  1. Find a short passage with normal speech, quiet word endings and a pause.
  2. Enable cleaning in noise, choose RNNoise and set moderate noise reduction.
  3. Keep speech leveling at zero, hum filtering off and the equalizer neutral for the comparison.
  4. Listen, switch to GTCRN and replay the same passage at the same volume and strength.
  5. Compare Original and Processed for each engine. Then adjust the strength separately for the engine you prefer.

What to listen for

The same percentage is not the same result

An identical slider position is a useful starting point, but does not guarantee equal cleanup across models. Adjust the strength again after choosing an engine. Stronger background removal is not worth losing speech detail.

Which engine is faster?

Without measurements on your device and the current extension version, there is no universal speed or resource-use winner. If audio breaks up during processing, test the other engine on the same video and reduce other demanding browser tasks.

Music and overlapping voices

Speech noise reduction can alter music and other useful sounds. It is not a selector for one speaker among several. Try a gentle setting or Original in those cases. For steady hum, use the dedicated filter; adjust volume changes with speech leveling.

Hear the words, not the noise

noise processes audio while you watch. Add the extension and adjust the cleaning to suit your recording.
